On the 28th and 29th of November, the EMIS Model United Nations (MUN) Club hosted a practice MUN Conference for students to discuss global issues as distinguished delegates, indicating an empowerment of youth and conflict resolution.

In the context of such a complex and turbulent world where the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rages on, and where the Syrian refugees crisis is growing bigger than just a matter of terrorism, it’s safe to say that an MUN Simulation is a way of engaging youth in global political issues as well as a way of inspiring them to make an impact in one way or another in the future. The EMIS MUN conference had the aim of connecting youth and empowering them with the knowledge that students can be thinkers, bringing solutions regarding important issues happening around the world.

The host school, EMIS, is an international school consisting of students from more than 40 countries, and the conference took place with the participation of EMIS students and German students who are on their visiting trips in Israel. It was an invaluable experience for students from both sides to get to know each other and to get an insight into different viewpoints and cultures. The vibrant and diverse body of participants was imperative in opening perspectives and thus, encouraging.

Other than the fusion of cultures and ideas, the conference also offered participants a chance to discuss global problems while feeling the problems . The fact that participants stepped into the shoes of delegates from countries that were not their own and that the conference took place in a conflicted country itself represent the hope that participants can be more aware and sympathetic on global matters and that with a sense of reality instilled into their minds, young people could go on to contribute to the creation of peace in their own ways.

Many may ask “What does a Model United Nations conference have to do with real solutions ? ”.  After all, MUN participants are just stepping into the shoes of politicians for a limited amount of time, and can not implement their solutions in reality. EMIS MUN, like other MUNs, has proven that the goal of Model United Nations, rather than affecting the world right away, is to empower youths with the belief that they themselves can create solutions and raise the awareness that is essential in their participation of glocal issues in the world later.

Samar K. Qasasfeh, an EMIS first year student from Palestine, said “ I learned a lot from EMIS MUN. My delegate is from Human Rights Committee so I had to research about Syrian refugees. For the first time, I get a big image of what is happening to them and why they are in such a situation. This has opened my mind and I tried to write my solutions to help them in a best way I can think of. ”

Thanks to EMIS MUN, many students also challenged themselves to speak in public. Sara C. Diaz, a first-year Spanish student from EMIS, said: “I feel like I’m less confident than other people in public speaking. I’m shy sometimes. EMIS MUN has improved my public speaking skills. The first time it was nervous, but after my first speech, it was fun to do it and I can feel my character. I feel every time you do it, it helps you erase this fear when speaking in public and after EMIS MUN, it’s easier for me to make a speech in English”.

The EMIS MUN Conference, the answer to the question “How can MUN simulation lead to peace resolution ?” lies in the youth empowerment and the thought provocation it brings about.
